When Vanessa came home early from a business trip, she expected to surprise her husband. Instead, she found a baby lying beside himâand nothing could have prepared her for the truth that followed.
After three long weeks in New York, Vanessa was finally back in sunny San Diego. Her business trip had been productive but exhausting, and all she wanted now was to curl up next to her husband, Eric, and sleep in her own bed.
She arrived well past midnight, her flight having landed later than expected. Still, she was too eager to wait. She slipped quietly through the front door, hanging up her coat and dropping her bag without turning on a single light.
Vanessa hadnât told Eric she was coming back earlyâshe wanted to surprise him. As she padded softly toward their bedroom, a small smile tugged at her lips. She missed him terribly. The plan was to get into bed silently and watch his reaction when he woke up to find her there.
But nothing couldâve prepared her for what she saw next.
Moonlight filtered through the window just enough for her to see Eric fast asleep on one side of the bed⊠and a baby on the other.
A baby.
Wrapped in a soft blue blanket, a tiny infant lay curled upâon her side of the bed. A pillow was carefully positioned beside him, probably to keep him from rolling off.
Vanessa froze. Her breath caught in her throat. They didnât have kids. Eric had no familyâheâd grown up in foster care. So whose baby was this?
She tiptoed around the bed and gave Ericâs shoulder a firm shake.
âEric. Eric! Wake up!â
He stirred groggily. âHuhâŠ? Vanessa?â he mumbled, blinking. âWhat are you doing here?â
âMeet me in the kitchen,â she whispered sharply. âNow.â
Still half-asleep, Eric followed her into the kitchen. Vanessa turned on the light and faced him with a look that could freeze fire.
âCare to explain the baby in our bed?â she asked, arms crossed.
Eric yawned. âSomeone left him on our doorstep a few days ago. I didnât know what to do. Iâve just been⊠taking care of him.â
âWhat? Why didnât you call the police?â
âI meant to. But heâs been crying, needing formula, diapersâthereâs been no time. I figured Iâd get to it. Listen, Iâm exhausted. You must be too. Letâs sleep and talk about it tomorrow.â
Vanessa stared at him, stunned. âYouâre kidding me.â
âPlease,â he said gently, walking back toward the bedroom. âWeâll figure it out in the morning.â
Left with more questions than answers, Vanessa reluctantly followed him and climbed into bed, her mind spinning. Despite everything, she fell asleep quicker than expectedâdrained from travel, confusion, and a million swirling suspicions.
7:03 a.m.
Muffled voices.
Vanessa stirred awake to the sound of a woman talking.
âEric, you have to tell her. You canât keep lying.â
âI will, I promise,â Eric replied. âI just⊠want the DNA results first.â
Vanessa sat up, heart pounding. DNA? Tell who what? And who the hell was this woman?
She crept toward the living room, then rounded the corner and stepped into full view.
âWhatâs going on?â she demanded. âI heard everything. Eric, is this the babyâs mother?â
Eric and the woman turned in surprise. The woman looked stunned for a secondâthen laughed.
âBaby mama?â she repeated, grinning.
âThereâs nothing funny about this!â Vanessa snapped. âEric, did you cheat on me with her?!â
Eric raised his hands in surrender. âNo! God, no. Please, just listen.â
âYou have ten seconds.â
âThis is⊠my sister. Her name is Mariah.â
Vanessa blinked. âExcuse me?â
âI met her two weeks ago by total chance. We were both shopping at the same grocery store and noticed we looked eerily alike. We started talkingâturns out we were both in the foster system. Neither of us knew we had siblings.â
Mariah stepped forward. âWeâre waiting for DNA results, but weâre almost sure. Everything matches. I even remember a boy from the group home that couldâve been him.â
Eric continued. âShe called last night in a panicâthere was a family emergency, and her husband was stuck out of town. She asked me to watch her son, Leo. I was too tired to explain when you woke me up.â
Vanessaâs hands dropped to her sides as the shock settled in. She looked at Mariah again, really looked at her. The resemblance was undeniable.
Mariah smiled kindly. âI get it. Itâs a lot to take in. But weâre not lying. Iâd never mess with someoneâs marriage. Iâve got a husband of my ownâand two more kids at home.â
Vanessa sighed, her shoulders slumping. âI⊠okay. I believe you.â
They all sat down in the living room. Over coffee and bagels, the pieces began falling into place. Eric apologized profusely for not telling her soonerâhe hadnât wanted to stress her while she was away.
âI just didnât know how to tell you something that huge over the phone,â he said.
A few days later, the DNA test confirmed itâEric and Mariah were siblings. The news bonded them instantly.
As for Vanessa, she found herself delighted. Watching Eric light up around Leoâand seeing the family he never thought heâd haveâmelted her heart.
Sheâd left for a business trip thinking sheâd come home to the same old life.
Instead, she came home to something better: a new nephew, a newly discovered sister-in-law, and the missing piece of her husbandâs past finally found.
